03The first of five episodes of Life Is Strange 2 will debut on 27 September. Previously Dontnod confirmed that we won’t reunite with Max Caulfield, as the sequel’s set to focus on an all-new cast. That said, the announcement trailer zooms out on a beaten-up backpack, alluding to a possible high school setting or at least an exploration of similarly adolescent themes.
But the best look at the sequel series we’ve had so far is The Awesome Adventures Of Captain Spirit. Not quite a demo nor a fully fledged prologue episode, it’s touted as a pint-sized standalone experience in its own right. However, we’re told it introduces a few key aspects of the upcoming season.
We meet the imaginative Christopher and his widowed father, three years after the events in Arcadia Bay. Christmas is fast approaching and Chris can’t wait to set up decorations, but his father is haunted by unwelcome reminders of the past, and is resorting to heavy drinking in order to cope. Chris tries to make sense of a world without his mother in it through imaginative play.
While Chloe and Max don’t get a look in, this quiet little sandbox of a Saturday morning is hardly disconnected from the series’ past, as you’ll discover. Additionally, some of your decisions will carry over to the next game, but playing this starter before the main course is by no means compulsory. Christopher will make an appearance in the new season but we get the feeling he’s not a main character. Despite that, after playing through his adventures we only want the best for Chris and look forward to seeing him again.
