Preacher Season 3

One hell of a good time

-

Adapted from Garth Ennis’ comics by Breaking Bad writer Sam Catlin and Seth Rogen, Preacher is one of the best shows you’re (probably) not watching. Dominic Cooper stars as Jesse Custer, a Texan preacher with the power to compel people to do anything he says. Wrestling with his faith, he sets out to find God with his criminal girlfriend Tulip (Ruth Negga) and vampire BFF Cassidy (Joe Gilgun). And things only get weirder…

With the first two seasons featuring a saintly killing machine, God in a dog suit, and a season-long subplot set in hell with Adolf Hitler, Preacher could never be accused of lacking imagination. And while not everything Catlin and co. throw at the screen sticks, enough does to make it worth your time.

Taking a fast and loose approach to adapting the comics, season three jumps back to the fan-favourite ‘All In The Family’ comic arc, in which Jesse returns to the hideous Louisiana plantation he once called home. There his awful, abusive extended family deal in voodoo and witchcraft – handy given that Tulip was shot at the end of season two and is in need of resurrection.

‘Strange’ sells it short. Shot with cinematic production values, Preacher is as surreal and grotesquely violent as television gets. And while it’s yet to fully capture the magic of the comics – in particular the sincere romantic streak – Preacher is a lurid, darkly comic treat. Jordan Farley
