A COLOURFUL MIX OF FORTNITE AND DUNGEONS & DRAGONS.

Looking like a playable anime movie and playing like a colourful mix of Fortnite and Dungeons & Dragons, new fantasy-themed battle royale Spellbreak ticks all the boxes to be one of 2020’s hottest multiplayer games. And the free beta is releasing first on PlayStation 4, within months.

“We took our inspiration from old-school shooters with skill shots and crazy mobility and we added in some modern twists to make a combat system that truly embodies fantasy action spellcasting,” explains Proletariat CEO Seth Sivak on the PlayStation Blog, as he reveals how the game does more than replace grenades with magical blasts. Your witchy characters can also fly, teleport, and ‘shadowstep’ in combat.

Spellbreak’s setting is called the Hollow Lands, and Sivak says there’s more to the game than aping Fortnite’s multiplayer. Mixing roguelike and RPG ideas, it gives you the opportunity to explore and take on quests to uncover more of the world. “You’ll want to explore every nook and cranny – don’t get too complacent; there are enemy mages around every corner trying to put an end to your journey,” he says.

Despite the quests, the combat is what will keep you hooked. You can mix spells to create combos; zap a tornado with lightning, for example, and it will be electrified. Sivak says: “There are dozens of spell combinations in Spellbreak and you will need to master all of them if you want to outlast your enemies.”
