It’s time to play the waiting game

FFVII Remake, Cyberpunk 2077, and Marvel’s Avengers delayed

-

SEPTEMBER IS NOW A STELLAR MONTH FOR PS4.

02As Nick Fury will tell you, putting together a team takes time – at least five movies and a few billion dollars. Unfortunately, you’ll have to wait a little longer for the videogame teamup. Developer Crystal Dynamics announced that Marvel’s Avengers has been delayed from its 15 May release to a new date of 4 September. The studio released a statement apologising for the delay and explaining the reasons behind it.

The dev decided that if it were to deliver on its mission statement of “an original story-driven campaign, engaging co-op, and compelling content for years to come,” more time was needed. Crystal Dynamics explained that it intends the final game to be “the ultimate Avengers gaming experience,” and went on to say: “As fans ourselves, it’s an honour and a privilege to work with these legendary characters and we know what these Super Heroes mean to us and True Believers around the world.”

CD Projekt Red delivered a similar message. The studio has chosen to delay the highly anticipated RPG Cyberpunk 2077 to 17 September, ensuring a battle for your wallet at the end of the year.

“We are currently at a stage where the game is complete and playable, but there’s still work to be done,” said co-founder Marcin Iwinski and head of studio Adam Badowski in a joint statement. “Night City is massive – full of stories, content, and places to visit – but due to the sheer scale and complexity of it all, we need more time to finish playtesting, fixing, and polishing.”

Both games are now out at the end of September, which not only makes it a stellar month for PS4 but raises questions about what this means for PS5’s launch lineup. Can we expect enhanced editions of both games on the new hardware? Or will these titles be the first big test of Sony’s next-gen crossplay strategy? Either way we win, as long as we can stand the wait.

A MERE MONTH

There was further news of delays when Square Enix announced the PS4-exclusive Final Fantasy VII Remake will now miss its planned 3 March release and will instead

launch on 10 April. This delay of one month isn’t so bad given we’ve waited almost the entire PS4 generation for this incredible-looking ground-up remake.

“We are making this tough decision in order to give ourselves a few extra weeks to apply final polish to the game and to deliver you with the best possible experience,” wrote producer Yoshinori Kitase on Square Enix’s official website. “I, on behalf of the whole team, want to apologise to everyone, as I know this means waiting for the game just a little bit longer.”

These delays are a reminder that developing videogames is a human activity, and it takes hard work to meet players’ high expectations. We say: devs, take your time.
