THE MOST POPULAR FIRST GAMES

A certain orange marsupial was many people’s first PlayStation experience

50% THE REST

This doesn’t just include the games you’ve perhaps never heard of, such as Blasto, Wild 9, Future Cop LAPD or Lone Soldier. There were also plenty of titles rocking only one vote that you’d think would get way more. We’re talking about games like Klonoa, Breath Of Fire 3, and Nightmare Creatures, to mention just a few hits of yesteryear.

There were also plenty of big names that had more than one vote but still only made up one percent of the mountain of responses we received. This is where you’ll find WipEout, Final Fantasy VII, and even Resident Evil.

CRASH BANDICOOT

Is it any surprise that PlayStation’s own orange whirlwind claimed such a large share of the vote? Between Crash Bash, good old CTR, the Bandicoot’s premier platforming outing, and, uh, The Wrath Of Cortex, he gives one heck of an introduction to the PlayStation family! His devilish attitude sold PlayStations.

METAL GEAR SOLID

Who else would sneak up behind the top spot? However, we hope that this doesn’t mean Snake is about to put Crash to sleep. Even at this early point in his career, Kojima wore his cinematic influences on his sleeve. This game’s presentation, on top of its tactical espionage action, hooked many and never let them go.

SPYRO THE DRAGON

You obviously love your brightly coloured puzzle platformer protagonists. The original scale baby flew into many hearts way back when and has stayed there ever since, atop a pile of gems. If you missed out back in the day, then we recomend you hunt down PS4’s Spyro Reignited Trilogy, it’s hot, hot, hot!

A DEMO DISC

Talk about a bygone era. The humble demo disc – often enclosed with this very mag’s predecessors – not only introduced existing gamers to their next favourite but they also showed plenty of yet-to-be-gamers a whole new world, no PSN account or internet connection required. Don’t you miss the old days sometimes?
