HORIZON FORBIDDEN WEST
Sony’s next-gen blockbusters will release on PS4
Sneaking out after Sony’s latest bombastic PS5 gameplay reveal was news that some of the next-gen console’s biggest exclusive games will also be released on PS4. As unbelievable as it may sound, games such as Horizon Forbidden West, Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, and Sackboy: A Big Adventure will be available on current-gen consoles.
This is fantastic news for anyone who looked on as PS5 preorders vanished from retailers faster than Mark Cerny’s commitment to Knack 3. It ensures we can all look forward to playing sequels to two of the defining games of the PS4 generation.
SWING LOW (EXPECTATION)
Naturally, the revelation that we can all head west with Aloy, hopefully in 2021, comes with a caveat. Jim
Ryan, president and CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment, is keen to dampen expectations for us now-genners. Writing on the PS Blog Ryan says: “[…] these three games were designed to take advantage of PS5 and its unique next-gen features like the ultra-high-speed SSD and DualSense controller.” Clearly there’s a downgrade to playing PS5developed games on PS4. They’ll lack the gloss and realism of ray tracing, faster load times, and 3D audio. But Sony has also shared that digital versions of these games include a free upgrade on both PS5 consoles, while the PS4 disc versions of these games include a free upgrade on the PS5 with the UHD Blu-ray disc drive.
Hopefully this is setting a trend for Sony – after all, we had to pay for PS3-to-PS4 upgrades.
Horizon Forbidden West will come out in 2021 – which version will you get?
