The month’s freebies reviewed

-

PS Plus has featured some heavy hitters over the last few months. While Oddworld: Soulstorm is leading April’s slew of offerings, it’s worth casting an eye over what you could have been playing last month, as Sony’s push to offer free blockbusters continued.

Let’s look back at last month’s headline act.

Final Fantasy VII Remake (presented for free on PS4) needs no introduction.

Well, to be clear, this was only the first part in the Final Fantasy VII Remake Project, meaning that you wouldn’t be batting back Meteor in this game… or maybe even the next. No, if this opening chapter got you hooked, you’re going to be in for the long haul as the story continues over multiple future releases. Furthermore, this version of the PS4 release will not be eligible for the free PS5 upgrade coming in June. With all that said, we loved Remake and gave it a perfect 10 last year.

Also on PS4 was gunslinging survival action game Remnant: From The Ashes. Evil has literally taken root, pitting you against interdimensional invaders that look like they’re barking up the wrong planet. You can either go in by yourself, all guns blazing, or with up to two other survivors for some extreme gun-based gardening with a distinctly soulsborne flavour.

PS VR-heads were then treated to free-roaming FPS Farpoint. Trapped a long, long way from home on an alien planet, two scientists fight for survival. Talk about a unique research opportunity! You can blast beasties alone or in co-op with either the PS Aim controller or your DualShock 4. With the next chapter in PS VR just around the corner, PS Plus may well keep enabling the VR-curious to top up their library.

Last, but not least, PS5 players could still pick up multiplayer vehicular combat game Destruction AllStars as well as new addition Maquette. To find out if you’re destined to be together with the latter unique puzzler, read our full review on p86.
