In the mood for… sucking

There are a lot of ways something can suck, not all of them bad

1 RESIDENT EVIL VILLAGE

Being able to see Lady Dimitrescu and her brood up close is a double-edged sword. Once these femmes fatales have got their hooks in you – literally – they intend to suck you dry. Also literally. The taste test is somehow both fan service and fan disservice at the same time.

2 RATCHET & CLANK

The Suck Cannon is exactly what its name suggests: a cannon that sucks. In a good way! Rather than simply consume and then fire what it draws in, the Suck Cannon’s quantum technology converts things into energy to then be fired back out as explosives. Upgrade it to a Vortex Cannon for extra sucking power.

3 CODE VEIN 3

Where there are vampires, there’s sucking, and Code Vein has vampires aplenty. You have to suck up the blood of your enemies to enhance the abilities of your powerful Blood Veils. The blood flows like wine in Code Vein; it’s just a matter of draining them before they can drain you!

4 TORNADO OUTBREAK

As air elemental Zephyr, it’s your duty to run amok through colourful landscapes sucking up pieces of whatever you can get your tornado-y grasp on so you can grow in size and break more stuff. The more you suck, the bigger you get, the more you can break, the more you can suck. It’s a wondrous cycle of sucking and destruction.

5 SOUL REAVER

As he’s missing a bottom jaw, twice-undead vampire-turned-wraith Raziel has to rely on sucking in his food, and the substance of choice is souls. Raziel can replenish himself simply by lowering his scarf and drawing the glowing remnants of his foes into the ominious black space that was his mouth.

6 DONUT COUNTY

There’s a certain thrill to wanton destruction. With control of a large hole in the ground, you zip around sucking in objects to grow bigger and bigger until you can swallow whole buildings in a satisfying inverted-Katamari-Damacy-like way.

7 WARFRAME

The Helminth is like having a giant plague spider that lives in your ship and talks to you in squelching grunts that translate as honeyed words. It’s just as freaky as it sounds. You can use the Helminth to subsume Warframes in order to gain one of their abilities and give it to a different Warframe. It’s essentially sucking the nutrients out and administering them as a shot to another Warframe. Lovely.

8 FINAL FANTASY IX

Atomos pops up several times throughout the Final Fantasy series, and it almost always sucks. A noteworthy example is in Final Fantasy IX, where half of Lindblum is taken out before the creature is stopped.

9 ASTRONEER
