WHAT’S NEW PLUS-SY CAT?
Digging into the random acts of gaming a lengthy PS Plus subscription offers
WolfEye Studios’ first project, action RPG Weird West, (p38) will step into the PlayStation saloon on 31 March. With WolfEye boasting a ton of ex-Arkane talent, now’s a good time to cast an eye back to April 2015 when Dishonored was offered on PS3 to PS Plus subscribers.
In it, silent protagonist Corvo Attano returns home only to be framed for the murder of his beloved empress and the kidnapping of her young daughter. Sympathetic forces offer aid, allowing Corvo to escape imprisonment. However, he ends up ensnared in a wider political conspiracy.
The Outsider, a trickster figure, bestows upon you a slew of powers, including a teleportation ability that became an Arkane game mainstay. And you’ve got plenty of room to express yourself. Whether you sneak around, choose violence, or indulge in a mix of both, the world reacts to you in a way that feels more nuanced than the typical morality meter mechanics of the time. Missions such as Lady Boyle’s Last Party also incorporate randomised elements, keeping things fresh for later replays – and introducing an element of chaos to many speedrunning categories.
But we’d be remiss not to mention the stellar art direction and world building. Every inch of Dunwall, a plague-ridden city heavily inspired by 19th- to 20th-century London and Bristol, leaves an impression… and we can’t wait to revisit it.
That just leaves us to race through the last two months’ PS Plus offerings. Godfall: Challenger Edition headlined both PS5 and PS4 in December, with Lego DC SuperVillains and Mortal Shell smashing things up on PS4. January mined the depths of multiplayer gaming with Deep Rock Galactic and Dirt 5, both on PS5 and PS4. PS Plus then ripped off January’s mask to reveal Persona 5 Strikers on PS4.
