Spider-Man: The Movie

The game of the film of the comic turns 20 years old

-

This may be only the predecessor to the lauded open-world sequel, but when it was originally released it tingled our spider sense in just the right way regardless. With Tobey Maguire and Willem Dafoe reprising their roles as Spidey and Green Goblin respectively, this was a fun, level-based romp that expanded on the movie.

Those extra storylines stick in the memory. Reader Christopher Adams’ favourite section is “the Shocker levels’ subway station, chase through the sewer, and showdown.” For Ali JT, however, it’s “the clock tower level with Vulture” that sticks out. You had to chase down the villain in the sky, and ascend a flaming tower as he hurled down hazards.

Developer Treyarch would go on to make Spider-Man 2 and its successors, where webs had swing physics and would stick to buildings. “‘Go web go’ as in ‘where the hell did the web attach?’” says @brenberger84, with Classical Krab adding: “I remember the untouchable cars driving below the city most of all.” Most levels encompassed limited play spaces across just a few tall skyscrapers, or were set indoors.

It might be outclassed these days, but as @brenberger84 says “this game was one of the better superhero offers of its generation.” Don’t miss out, web-head.
