WHAT’S NEW PLUS-SY CAT?

Digging into the random acts of gaming a lengthy PS Plus subscription offers

-

Faster than a speeding bullet, a fresh offering of free PS Plus games is here again. Last month’s searing selection sported Hot Wheels Unleashed on both PS5 and PS4, as well as slow-mo action-’em-up Superhot. Also only on PS4, we look skyward at superhero fighter Injustice 2.

Is it a bird? Is it a plane? Is it heading straight towards us!? Trotting out the old ‘What if Superman was evil, though?’ chestnut,

Injustice 2 pits the usual DC suspects against each other in one-on-one fights.

From the developers of Mortal Kombat, the super powered scraps have never looked so good, or so brutal – but are nowhere near as bloody. Whether you’re Harley Quinn letting loose the hyenas, or flinging puny heroes around as Gorilla Grodd, there’s a satisfying amount of depth to throwing hands. Stellar presentation makes this far more than just a contender, but there’s no ignoring the massive lump of Kryptonite in the soup.

On the one hand, the Gear System allows you to make your super powered favourites your own through loot drops of snazzy costume pieces and weapons boasting a little bit of status-altering spice. On the other, it’s nowhere near as simple as we just made it sound.

While you do get a fair amount of random tat for free, you can also buy specific skins or equipment sets using in-game currency (bought with real money). Did we mention characters get a stat bonus if they rock up kitted out in all five matching pieces of a gear set? No, but we bet you aren’t surprised - and we haven’t even mentioned all the DLC.

Don’t misunderstand, the base Injustice 2 experience remains a solid fighter we can’t tear our eyes away from. But there’s no getting away from how this inclusion feels less like a fun freebie and more like a bill that will soon be due.
