Getting a little closer to its Ultimate self

PlayStation Official Magazine (UK) - - CONTEST -

The yearly refinement of EA’s allconsuming football sim is almost here, and there are plenty of new additions for pros and newcomers alike. The good news is the game is getting a balanced host of improvements, from core gameplay additions to finessing FIFA Ultimate Team.

Last issue we detailed additions such as Timed Finishing (a timed second tap of shoot delivers extra power and precision), Active Touch (progressive animation), 50/50 challenges (physics-based tackling), and Dynamic Tactics (press the D-pad to alter your team’s defensive and offensive moods). All of those make FIFA 19 play far better than previous editions – if that were possible.

For many, however, what you play in FIFA 19 is as important as how. One new mode that catches our video-assisted eye is a refresh of the New KickOff mode. No longer a simple versus match, New Kick-Off enables you to set up limitless ways to play against friends. You can create House Rules to tailor matches (creating games where the winner is the first to a set goal tally, or only headed goals count). You can adjust the referee settings, turning off fouls for some oldfashioned ’70s soccer fun. New KickOff tracks your match stats too, and it’s tied to your PSN account so you can take these bespoke competitions on the road and play anywhere.

FIFA Ultimate Team also gets a shake up in the version we play, with new Division Rivals. Aimed at mid-tier players, Rivals features ten divisions tied closely to your skill. Best of all, Champions Points can now be banked and used in the following week to enter a weekend league. So if you just fail to make the cut, your hard graft can be held back for the next qualification week.

Helping you improve is a new replay tool that enables you to learn from the best, with key match moments played out and the DualShock 4 inputs placed over the action. Study hard and you can get closer to earning this year’s new Icons, which now include Rivaldo, Cruyff, and Eusébio.

Now with official Champions and Europa League licences, FIFA 19 is unstoppable.

Above You can now alter your tactics dynamically in-match from the D-pad, for standard and Ultimate Team games.
