An­nounced in De­cem­ber last year, we fi­nally know more about the next in­stal­ment in Mega Man’s 30 year his­tory, nearly a decade af­ter his last out­ing. It’s a more mod­ern Mega Man take, pixel art re­placed by 3D mod­els and a 2.5D per­spec­tive, as well as the all-new Dou­ble Gear sys­tem.

Se­ries vil­lain Dr Wily can’t leave well enough alone, as your ally Dr Light knows only too well. The pair un­earth some long-for­got­ten re­search from their time at Ro­bot Univer­sity, and each kit out their own re­spec­tive bots with the pro­to­type. The Dou­ble Gear sys­tem grants Mega Man a num­ber of new pow­ers, though it’s prone to over­heat­ing and can be es­pe­cially tax­ing on the lit­tle blue bot. But as Dr Wily’s Ro­bot Masters also have it, it’s ab­so­lutely vi­tal to your fight against them.

The Dou­ble Gear comes in es­pe­cially handy in boss fights. The Speed Gear slows time, en­abling deft plat­form and pro­jec­tile tra­ver­sal alike, while the Power Gear charges your Mega Buster for an added edge to your at­tacks. If you find your­self at crit­i­cal health, you can en­gage both gears to ac­cess a hid­den abil­ity. And that’s say­ing noth­ing of the pow­ers you’ll pick up af­ter de­feat­ing each Ro­bot Mas­ter. Crush­ing blocks out of thin air! Bolts of elec­tric­ity! It’s all shap­ing up to be a lot of silly fun and we can’t wait to gear up later this year.
