CALL OF DUTY: WWII – SHADOW WAR
Going out with a bang
The final DLC for Call Of Duty: WWII is the most explosive yet, with three new multiplayer maps (Excavation, Airship, and Chancellery) bolstered by a new War mode mission, and the finale to the Nazi Zombies story arc.
All three multiplayer maps do a good job of mixing indoor and exterior locations. One minute you’re confined to the decadent halls of Chancellery, the next you’re out in the rubble. Airship offers flashbacks to Battlefield 1 with its main draw of shooting out and over the top of a blimp, while Excavation maintains the series’ ability to tell a story with its map designs – here an Algerian treasure hunt.
New War mode mission Operation Arcane takes some liberties with its WW2 setting, preferring the mythologies of Indiana Jones and Captain America to historical fact. Here Tesla guns rub shoulders with uncovered alien tech inside a mysterious Nazi lab – it’s the kind of escapism more akin to Zombies or early Treyarch, and its very much welcome.
Which segues into the final chapter of this COD’s Zombies campaign, titled Frozen Dawn. The whole setup has seen a vast improvement over previous overly hordey editions. This chapter sets the team against big bad Thule and comes across as Id-lite in its blend of horror and narrative pacing.
