Scraping off the Rust
A peek into the survival genre’s future
Often a genre associated with PC, recent years have offered some survival games that feel great on console. Minecraft shines because of its simplicity and ease of access, and even Fallout 76 managed to merge RPG with the survival genre in a neat way (well, it did after all the updates landed).
Rust: Console Edition is currently in closed beta. Despite the innocuoussounding name it’s become a behemoth on PC thanks to the real freedom it gives players to explore and interact within its world, and we expect it to do the same on PlayStation. Everything’s on the table, from eating and drinking to making clothes, and arming yourself to contend with both NPCs and other players.
The game describes itself as the “ultimate social experiment”; without rigid teams players are free to dupe one another out of their gains or team up to become stronger than they would be individually. It leads to great moments of interaction that could form some of your favourite gaming tales.
Console Edition is developed by Double Eleven, and the studio has made some smart choices when adapting Facepunch’s vision to work well on console. If you didn’t manage to make it into the closed beta, this one should be on your radar when it launches fully later in 2021.
