Acer Nitro 5 an affordable gaming machine

- BY DAVID RICHARDS

As PC gaming takes off in Australia The Good Guys have introduced an affordable new Acer Niro gaming notebook which while being powerful enough for a good gaming experience doesn’t break the bank.

At $1,799 the Acer Nitro 5 has an Nvidia 10-series graphics chip, an Intel Core i5 processor and looks as good as some of the more expensive gaming machines out there.

Acer is the world’s #1 PC gaming Company and the Nitro 5 reflects Acers commitment to delivering “great looking” gaming machines. The lid is a smart slab of brushed metal, the hinge is finished with an attractive dark red shade, and the red theme continues to the keyboard and trackpad.

This Acer weighs 2.7kg and its 27mm thick from top to bottom which makes it a lot easier to carry in a bag.

It has a USB 3.1 Type-C port, and an extremly good keyboard. The Acer’s keyboard has a red backlight, but no RGB LEDs.

Acer has also built in a 1080p IPS panel into the Nitro 5, which is good at this price. Images on the screen are vivid, this is helped immensely by the 15.6-inch full HD display, which features in-plane-switching (IPS) technology to widen viewing angles and comes with a matte finish that does an excellent job of reducing glare.

Although some buyers might lust after a 4K display, the

GTX 1050 Ti in the Nitro 5 isn’t powerful enough to render immersive games at high enough frame rates to make them playable at a 4K resolution.

If you’re looking for a 4K display and a GPU that can power it, you’ll have to spend significantly more.

The one area of performance in which the Nitro 5 unquestionably excels is battery life. The system lasted for 10 hours and 7 minutes on our rundown test, which is approximately twice the battery life that the Asus, Lenovo, and MSI offer.
