Mayor calls for action to secure sugar industry
TIME is running out to save the Mossman Mill and secure the local sugar industry.
Douglas Shire Mayor Julia Leu is calling on action to be taken before it’s too late.
“Time is running out and our resilient canegrowers need absolute certainty about the Mossman Mill,” she said.
“The project has the potential to lead the way for industry diversification of the Austra- lian Sugar Industry and grow an environmentally sustainable manufacturing industry in Douglas Shire. “But time is of the essence. “Far Northern Milling Pty Ltd (Mossman and Tableland Canegrowers), Senior Douglas Shire Council staff and I held solid discussions about the future of the Mossman Mill with Leichhardt MP Warren Entsch and Deputy Prime Minister Michael McCormack in Cairns.”
A representative from Warren Entsch’s office said the Leichhardt MP was behind the mill 100 per cent and “has been since the very beginning”.
At a press conference Mr Entsch said he will strongly advocate for a solution.
“I will do my darnedest,” he said. “It is absolutely critical. “This isn’t a group coming forward asking ‘we need you to give us a bucket load of money to find our answers’.
“They’ve got the answers and they have a very strong case to consider.”
Far Northern Milling and Cr Leu also met with the opposition spokesman for infrastructure, transport, cities and regional development, Anthony Albanese, in Cairns on Tuesday afternoon to push the issue further onto the Federal Government’s radar.
“Bipartisan support is vital and our region needs a firm commitment,” she said.
