Festive family affair at Clink
CHRISTMAS at the Clink will be a family affair this year.
Renowned operatic mezzo soprano Alteouise DeVaughn will share her family’s Christmas traditions at a special Christmas performance on December 23.
“For our family, when we get together during Christmas, somebody plays the piano and everybody gets up and performs,” Ms DeVaughn said.
“We come from a family of musicians. Where I’m from, we would go Christmas carolling to our neighbours and pick up people along the way. We will continue that in the Clink.”
It’s an extra special performance for Ms DeVaughn as her family will play part in the show. Her son, Justin Austin and his wife Amanda, who are both professional opera singers, will take part.
“They’re giving up their time on the holiday to share their talent,” she said.
“Since they’re visiting for Christmas I thought I’d share him with Port Douglas.
“We’ll have a nice quartet with beautiful harmonies.
“You’ll hear your favourite Christmas carols and some arrangements in a different way, along with some opera and musical theatre. It’s very traditional, so we’re going to have very beautiful old fashioned Christmas carols that everyone can sing along to.”
Other special guests include violinist Kirtley Leigh, the Combined Choir and tenor vocalist Benjamin Stock from Cairns. The performance includes incredible local talent.
“I love the way this community comes together, there’s room for everyone when it comes to music,” Ms DeVaughn said.
“If you want to celebrate Christmas with music, have fun, meet some new friends and old friends come to the Clink. It's a wonderful celebration of music and fun and it’s a great way to bring in Christmas.”
Ms DeVaughn praised the Clink for being the perfect avenue to share the arts for locals and visitors alike.
“Some people come up here on holiday and they would do a show at the Clink,” Ms DeVaughn said.
“It’s just wonderful.”
