Couper shines on Gold Coast
RISING Mossman star Couper Smith has stepped up to the occasion at the Greg Norman Junior Masters tournament on the Gold Coast, but it is next years event he is targeting.
The talented golfer shot an impressive 80 (nett 68) in the first round on Monday and followed it up with an 82. He is still eligible in the under 13 category next year and has his sights set on the silverware.
“This is my third year in the under 13 division and I love representing Mossman and the Far North,” he said.
“I can still compete in the division next year so I am building to give it a real crack.”
Couper said he was thrilled to play in the Cameron Smith Junior Classic in the lead up to the Greg Norman event.
“He is my idol,” Couper said of Smith, who won the Australian PGA title for a second straight year last week.
“And to play in the Greg Norman is an honour as it is such a prestigious and premier national tournament.”
Couper’s was in 11th place after the second round one round to play before the final fourth.
“I am going to have to play better to make that final round,” he said.
Couper and Annabelle Hutchings are also representing FNQ in the team events on the Gold Coast.
Annabelle Hutchings and Couper Smith represented Far North Queensland at the Greg Norman Junior Masters.
