Couper shines on Gold Coast

RIS­ING Moss­man star Couper Smith has stepped up to the oc­ca­sion at the Greg Nor­man Ju­nior Mas­ters tour­na­ment on the Gold Coast, but it is next years event he is tar­get­ing.

The talented golfer shot an im­pres­sive 80 (nett 68) in the first round on Mon­day and fol­lowed it up with an 82. He is still el­i­gi­ble in the un­der 13 cat­e­gory next year and has his sights set on the sil­ver­ware.

“This is my third year in the un­der 13 di­vi­sion and I love rep­re­sent­ing Moss­man and the Far North,” he said.

“I can still com­pete in the di­vi­sion next year so I am build­ing to give it a real crack.”

Couper said he was thrilled to play in the Cameron Smith Ju­nior Clas­sic in the lead up to the Greg Nor­man event.

“He is my idol,” Couper said of Smith, who won the Aus­tralian PGA ti­tle for a sec­ond straight year last week.

“And to play in the Greg Nor­man is an honour as it is such a pres­ti­gious and premier na­tional tour­na­ment.”

Couper’s was in 11th place af­ter the sec­ond round one round to play be­fore the fi­nal fourth.

“I am go­ing to have to play bet­ter to make that fi­nal round,” he said.

Couper and Annabelle Hutch­ings are also rep­re­sent­ing FNQ in the team events on the Gold Coast.

Annabelle Hutch­ings and Couper Smith rep­re­sented Far North Queens­land at the Greg Nor­man Ju­nior Mas­ters.
