Only way is up

CAFE owner Damion Jones has seen just about everything during his decade long stint of working in Port Douglas.

“When I first came here the Global Financial Crisis had just ended,” he said.

“The town was just empty shops with for lease signs everywhere.

“But I’ve seen the town build up strong from almost rock bottom.”

The Little Larder owner said he was extremely optimistic the town and region would bounce back hard in the back half of 2020.

And a Buy Douglas: Build Douglas campaign, driven by Douglas Shire Council in partnership with the Gazette, is encouraging residents to help get their local businesses through until then by spending their cash in the region.

Mr Jones owns the Little Larder and has been operating as a takeaway with a new grab-and-go menu.

He said he’s been overwhelmed with support since he resumed trade in late April.

“I know they’ve been supporting everybody and they need to be congratulated for that,” he said.

“We’re doing all right.”

Mr Jones said although things are tough at the moment, he believes the town will bounce back strong when domestic travel is reinstated.

And a Buy Douglas: Build Douglas campaign by Douglas Shire Council (with support from the Port Douglas & Mossman Gazette) is encouraging residents to spend their money in the region in the face of the coronavirus pandemic.

“I’m optimistic about the second half of the year,” he said.

“I know people want to come back, October, November and December could look really good for us.

“If they opened the borders this weekend, I reckon we’d be full.”

Though restrictions have eased slightly for cafes, restaurants and pubs, Mr Jones said the customer limit isn’t viable for his business but he’s looking forward to opening as soon as possible.
