Think of the health benefits
In July, George Yeoh wrote to the POST: “From a health perspective, the proposal by Westside Wolves Hockey Club to establish a facility at Mt Claremont Oval ticks so many boxes, it is bewildering that it does not have the backing of the community and administrators to realise its establishment.”
Dr Yeoh is a respected public health advocate and medical researcher. I doubt you would find many in that field who would not see community sporting clubs as providing a public good.
This is not a greedy, profitmotivated land developer wanting to put high-rise on the local park. The club is replete with local volunteers who want to play sport in an area designated for sport to be played.
They give up their precious time so their kids and others will have an enjoyable experience, learn new skills and become co-operating, sharing and participating adults and citizens. That’s what they stand for.
Every sporting activity presently available on that oval will have space to continue and a new sport will be added.
Of course people are sensitive to change, but this proposal is not an existential threat to the park or other users or residents; it is a proposal to use the area more efficiently and increase sporting activity.
At a time when the Australians have become the world champions of obesity, oh, how most communities would welcome such a change for the good of their young people.
