A for­mer Shen­ton Park Catholic priest ac­cused of sex­u­ally abus­ing and phys­i­cally as­sault­ing chil­dren in Perth over 23 years has pleaded not guilty to 16 charges.

Su­bi­aco res­i­dent Patrick Holmes (83) is ac­cused of abus­ing chil­dren as young as six be­tween 1969 and 1992 when he was a priest in Shen­ton Park and Carlisle.

Mr Holmes was a priest at St Aloysius Church in Keight­ley Road in Shen­ton Park in the 1970s and 80s.

L a s t mont h p o l i c e charged Mr Holmes with un­law­fully and in­de­cently as­sault­ing a male – al­leged to be a seven-year-old boy.

The other charges were laid ear­lier this year.

Mr Holmes was a priest at a Carlisle church when the al­leged of­fence was com­mit­ted.

When he ap­peared in the Perth Mag­is­trates’ Court on Tues­day, two un­law­ful as­sault charges were ad­journed un­til June 10 and 14 other charges, in­clud­ing in­de­cent deal­ing of a child un­der 14 years, were com­mit­ted to the Dis­trict Court on Fe­bru­ary 1 next year.
