JTC student named top Aussie
John XXIII College Year 10 student Emily Tyson excelled at the recent World Scholar’s Cup Tournament of Champions at Yale University in the US.
In an outstanding performance, Emily won nine gold medals and received the award for the top individual performer from all Australian schools.
Her teammates, Ben Linsten and Alexandra Panther, also picked up three gold medals each, and the John XXIII team was undefeated in debating.
The senior division competition involved more than 900 top students from 56 countries, and was the grand finale after regional and global rounds were held around the world earlier in the year.
Emily said the best part of the Tournament of Champions was seeing how all the hard work that they had put in paid off.
“Individually we had each put in 500-plus hours of study and work, and finally seeing what our efforts had created was incredibly rewarding,” she said.
“Another part of the experience that will stay with me always was the friendships that I formed.
“Making friends from Indonesia, Canada, Zimbabwe, Thailand and so many more was something that helped me to better understand other cultures and lives.”
