In a race blighted by rotten weather, the peloton take refuge in the Spanish sun. If the climber Dan Martin proved the revelation of last year’s race, it was the somewhat larger form of Slovenian sprinter Luka Mezgec (Argos-Shimano) who left Catalonia with his reputation most enhanced this time around. While the world’s best sprinting talent was missing, it shouldn’t take away from Mezgec’s three stage wins – a performance that shows the Dutch team has sprint power to spare.
