By 1953 Fausto Coppi ruled over the Italian peloton so much that only fan favourite Guido De Santi got away with audacious attacks. Coppi didn’t much like it but knew that these escapes were good for business. It was on the stage to Rome that De Santi had his reward. The attack he initiated here saw him wear pink in Rome.
