SCINTO SAYS…

Already, fatigue will play a part

You might not see it on TV but stages like this one can have a big impact on the Giro. The time gaps won’t be big but this is where tiredness starts to set in. The gruppo will be starting to show who’s coming into form, who’s pedalling well and who’s not. This is also where the head starts to be a factor. Between stages 4 and 12 there’s a lot that can go wrong psychologically.

The break will go early but whether it survives depends on who’s in it, how many, and what sort of a threat they represent. It depends on who chases, how hard, and where they start. If there aren’t two teams prepared to work hard then it’s just possible it could stay away.

Androni Giocattoli-Venezuela’s new signing Johnny Hoogerland has made a career out of daring (and often doomed) escapes. Will this stage prove to be yet another?
