José Manuel Fuente’s 1974 ascent of Monte Carpegna represents the high watermark of his struggle with Eddy Merckx and marks the day Merckx seemed beaten. However, the ‘Cannibal’ regained time in the TT and when Fuente suffered a hunger flat on a stage to Sanremo, Merckx secured his fifth and final Giro.
