Riccardo Menapace from Termeno rode his first Giro in 1938, the year Mussolini sent all the star riders to the Tour de France. Menapace finished third among that edition’s many independent riders but after the war chose to take Austrian nationality. He won the Tour of Austria in 1949 and 1950, the latter aged 35.
