In 1946, Slavic militants wanted Trieste for Tito’s Yugoslavia but Italy had the city. The Giro stage was annulled when riders found the road blocked by the militants but 17 patriots and their bikes were dropped on the outskirts of town by American armoured cars. A local rider won this truncated ‘stage’ to the delight of Trieste.
