one down in the range from the Prisma worn by Philippe Gilbert, the Ultralight nevertheless shares a lot of tech with DMT’s range-topper: the upper is microfiber with large mesh panels for venting and the large heel cup adds lots of stability without troubling your Achilles.

The sole is carbon and fibreglass; it’s heavier and less stiff than a full carbon sole but still race-able. It has a good size toe bumper and heel insert for walking.

Closure system is by two Velcro straps and one Atop dial pulling on a free-floating pad. The combination makes for a shoe that’s easy to fine tune. The Ultralight is relatively high volume, so it suits bulkier feet and being worn with thicker socks in winter. The included insoles are supportive where they need to be and highly cushioned, too.

All this makes for a shoe that majors on comfort. While racing in the Ultralights would hardly feel like wearing wellies, they are best suited to sportives and big blocks of long training rides. We’ve ridden for over six hours in these DMTs with no niggles at all.

The name Ultralight doesn’t really ring true as they weigh in at 636g (pair, size 45) but I guess Ultracomfort doesn’t have quite the same performance ring to it.
