We’ve looked back over the post-war history of the Tour to ind all the riders who have, like Van Poppel, won four stages or more in a single edition. The list is dominated by GC riders and sprinters. In the 71 races since 1947, 41 di ferent riders have done it (sometimes more than one rider in a single Tour). While there was decade- long hiatus between Van Poppel doing it in 1988 and the next time ( Tom Steels in 1998), it’s become common in recent years. One sprinter has won four or more stages in every Tour since 2008, except one.
