Trentin turns season around

-

In the wet on a technical Glasgow city circuit, luck was finally on Matteo Trentin’s side as he turned an injury-marred season around to win a maiden European road title. The Italian missed more than two months of racing after a crash at Paris-Roubaix left him with a fractured spine, having also broken a rib pre-season. Trentin and team-mate Davide Cimolai made the crucial 10-rider break that formed with 55km to go and contested the win, before the pair avoided a crash in the closing kilometres. Trentin then held off cyclo-cross rivals Mathieu van der Poel and Wout Van Aert in the sprint.
