The sun's rays just break through the clouds over Sicily and shine down on the elite group of GC favourites, including Simon Yates, Thibaut Pinot, George Bennett and Domenico Pozzovivo, as they make their way up the 25km climb to the top of Mount Etna. The irst summit inish of this year's race, on Europe's most active volcano, lived up to its explosive billing and the GC battle erupted into life. Yates attacked 1.5km from the top and bridged up to his team-mate, Esteban Chaves. The Colombian took the stage win, while Yates took the leader's pink jersey.
