No fewer than six climbs totalling 5,000 metres uphill litter stage 3 of this year’s Ruta del Sol, making it arguably the toughest day of racing so far in 2021. It starts in Beas de Segura, covering 191km north to Villarodrigo, and the longest of the six climbs, La Toba, comes halfway, is 10.5km long and peaks at 15 per cent. Even the world’s best climbers might recoil at the prospect of such a challenge, so early in the year.
