With just two race wins in 2020 - the joint lowest of all the WorldTour teams - it was a troubling year for Movistar, and Enric Mas’s two fifth-place finishes at the Tour and Vuelta were the only real success stories. The signing of Miguel Ángel López was a predictable one, as the Colombian is one of the best climbers in the sport, but he will likely come up short in grand tours once time trials have their say - not unlike Quintana or Landa before him. One thing López’s arrival guarantees is that Movistar’s strength in depth remains in the mountains. Another thing that remains the same: the presence of quadragenarian Alejandro Valverde, who enters his 20th and probably final season as a pro.
