Annemiek van Vleuten’s transfer to Movistar on a two-year deal came as a surprise when it was announced last summer; the Spanish squad has spent the three years since it launched focussed on developing home talent rather than making a major impact in the WorldTour. The Dutchwoman’s signing is a game changer and gives the team a bonafide winner, arguably the strongest rider in the peloton. Aged 38, Van Vleuten shows no sign of slowing down or of her dominance waning - her streak of five one-day wins last year was imperious and could have been more had she not been injured. Van Vleuten is capable of getting wins alone, but the team will be looked to by others to do the lion’s share of the work, which is where experienced back-up in the form of Leah Thomas and Barbara Guarischi will be needed.
