Tour of Flanders Oudenaarde, Belgium
4 APRIL 2021
Kasper Asgreen makes the penultimate race- defining attack at the Tour of Flanders on the flat roads between the Kruisberg and the Oude Kwaremont. He will pull Wout van Aert and Mathieu van der Poel clear with him, leaving his team- mate Julian Alaphilippe, Bahrain-Victorious riders Dylan Teuns and Marco Haller and Total Direct Energie’s Anthony Turgis behind. The Dane would then follow Van der Poel’s attack on the Kwaremont, which would dispose of Van Aert, and the two would ride to the finish together. Van der Poel was the favourite in the sprint, but Asgreen was the stronger of the two and he came past the Dutchman on the straight, breaking his resolve and shocking the cycling world, which had expected Van der Poel to win as a formality.
