Philippe Gilbert stepped back from racing the Tour of Flanders, citing “a lack of mental and physical freshness”. The Belgian, 38, recorded a DNF at E3 Saxo Bank Classic and Gent Wevelgem, and could only manage 72nd in Milan-San Remo - the last monument win missing from his palmarès.
