The European Championships are a relatively new concept, with road titles only dating from 2016, and it’s still not clear how prestigious a race it is. Three out of the five men’s road race champions have been Italian, while four out of the five female champions have been Dutch, so it will be interesting to see if these nationality trends continue on a relatively punchy course in Trento. Less likely to be a sprint this time around.
