Canyon dhb SunGod’s British all- rounder on DJing, weird prizes, and Anthony Head
WWhere’s home? The world’s greatest city, Bristol. I’ve lived here for just over two and a half years. I’m from just south of Reading, 15 minutes north of where the team is based. I went to university in Exeter, and then ended up moving to Bristol after I graduated.
What’s your favourite race?
The World Championships. It’s just an outlier for the whole year. All the nations, all the fans. A city which wouldn’t normally have a bike race, and they’ve put it on, like Innsbruck. It’s so cool to have that variability.
What’s your favourite climb?
I have a little connection with Dundry Hill, south of Bristol, because it is always part of my route home, wherever I go. I’ve ridden it in various states of fatigue. Or even Belmont, another of the Bristol classics.
Where in the world would you like to get lost on your bike?
South East Asia. I have really enjoyed some of the Chinese races we have done. I liked the Olympic test event, in Japan. I think there’s a lot more to be discovered out there, it would be a pretty mega place to take my bike.
What’s the best prize you’ve ever won?
I think I won some pasta at Alsace. That was pretty useful. In China, I won a toy Ford Kuga, which is at my parents’ at the moment. This horrible brown Ford Kuga, you could open all the doors and the boot. That’s one of the most bizarre. I got a model ship too, a make-yourown cardboard thing.
If you had one extra hour in the day what would you do?
Probably do some mixing. I started a year and a half ago, just DJing basically. I do it for my own enjoyment at the moment. I thought about trying to gig in the off-season. It was after I went to Motion for the first time, it all kicked off. Do you even live in Bristol if you don’t mix drum and bass?
When were you last star struck?
The peloton at the Tour of Britain? I saw an actor in Bath the other day... from Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Anthony Head, that’s his name, I was convinced it was him, he has grown a beard. He got an orange juice and I was staring at him.
What advice would you give your teenage self?
Make the most of university. I studied sport and health sciences. I did make the most of it, but I think I could have managed parts of it better; I was just going to lectures and riding my bike with my mates.
What’s your best cycling hack?
When I’m training, I try to plan a really good route for a five or sixhour ride. I try to find a good cafe two thirds of the way round. I know some people who just do loops around their house. If I’m doing a long ride, I want to make it a day out, go to Wales, or find somewhere new in the Cotswolds. I’d find doing the same thing quite boring, so I like to plan.
