Daan is a powerful rider, a good time triallist, and a good rider for the classics. At the same time, he can also survive on the long climbs, as we saw already in the Tour de l’Avenir. He was one of the guys who remained with the last 20 riders in the mountain stages. He can also be a really good team-mate for GC contenders. He’s not a sprinter or a puncheur, but I would say he is a powerful guy with a big engine. He is one of the oldest riders with the team, one of the most experienced guys, and he is ready for the next step. He was probably ready to step up to the WorldTour last year, but the pandemic has been a difficult period for U23 riders. He had fewer opportunities to show his capacities and talent, and so he decided to do another year with SEG in 2021. Daan has the energy, the skills and the experience to make that next step. The first few races he did with Trek-Segafredo, he was always the best at helping and also achieved some good results, which means a lot. He has time, and I think he will specialise more with his time trial skills. He’s a really good time triallist, but we missed our training camps last year, and this is really important as for our team it’s one of the only chances to fix problems. We missed important, high-value time with the guys. Now, he has all the time he needs, and the chance to work with Trek and all their experience.
