Go with the flow and be patient, says travel photographer and Instagrammer Lauren Bath. Here’s her guide to the perfect photos.
What’s the secret to taking great shots of wildlife?
Patience. Having the right equipment and protective clothing can also make the job easier and more comfortable. I always aim to take a “safety” shot, which is the first image I can obtain of the wildlife I’m shooting. Then I work on improving the image by getting closer to my subject, improving my composition, waiting for the animal to give different facial expressions or eye contact and waiting for the light to change.
How about capturing the perfect sunrise or sunset?
The key is being in a gorgeous location at the right time. Many new photographers don’t realise the light can change and improve dramatically before and after the actual event. At times, the light is at its most beautiful 30 minutes before sunrise or after sunset.
What makes a camera more suited to travel photography?
You need the capability to shoot using manual settings, great weather resistance in case you get stuck out in the rain, and for the camera to be lightweight.
How can people correct common travel photography mistakes?
Many people shoot exclusively in automatic mode. Although you’re guaranteed to get a shot, you’ll definitely have a lot more creative options if you take the time to learn about your camera. One thing I see on Instagram that makes me cringe is people lacking originality – I see entire accounts dedicated to doing exactly what other people are doing. It’s important to trust your own style and to develop your own creativity.
