VALENCISO RESERVA RIOJA 2010 / $64

In the space of just 20 years, this terroir-focused wine grower has set a new standard, with the Reserva creating a regional benchmark. This drop has an intense red cherry and plum bouquet, with licorice, cola nut and tobacco in the background. It’s a magnificent red that deserves to be paired with a juicy steak.

CASTILLO LABASTIDA CRIANZA RIOJA 2013 / $25

Labastida village in the Sierra Cantabria Mountains gives its name to the cooperative covering 540 hectares of vines. Red fruits lead the way in this wine, with some dark plum and a whiff of mocha. The generous flavours speak of blueberries and dark cherries, with mild-mannered tannins in support. Lamb cutlets, please.

MARQUÉS DE RISCAL RESERVA RIOJA 2011 / $30

History and modernity meld at Marqués de Riscal – the bodega dates back to 1858 at this Gehry-designed complex with a fivestar hotel. The wines have that traditional yet innovative feel, too. This Reserva has aromas of dark cherries and raspberry pastilles, savoury flavours and a firm tannin backbone. Try it with jamón Ibérico.

CALÓ JOVEN RIOJA 2016 / $18

This new-wave tempranillo is bright and breezy, in keeping with its vibrant label. Fresh raspberry and aniseed aromas abound, with hints of briary character from the small parcel that was aged in oak. Light-bodied and fine-framed, Caló has juicy red-fruit flavours and restrained tannins that make it a wonderful party red. Enjoy it with chorizo.

TELMO RODRIGUEZ LANZAGA RIOJA 2010 / $76

Telmo Rodriguez has changed the shape of Spanish wine, returning to his beloved Rioja to craft this triumphant tempranillo. Wild herbs and savoury spice aromas mingle with dark plum and blueberries, while the spicy oak frames intense fruit flavours. It has the power and complexity to partner slow-roasted lamb.
