Window Seat

-

They look like the tentacles of an octopus but these strings of wiggly hoops – in fact, the floating cages of one of seven fish farms operated by seafood supplier Cromaris and used to catch sea bass and sea bream – are proof that the waters off Croatia’s Dalmatian coast are good for more than sailing. Stretching from the shores of Dugi otok, the farm’s position in the Adriatic Sea – where the deep navy waters begin to turn turquoise – was chosen for its clarity and the island itself is just as untouched. Though a mere 45 kilometres from end to end, Dugi otok, which has 1700 residents, is the longest island in a chain of similarly slender isles. On the southeastern point of this stick of land is the Telašćica Nature Park, a haven for marine and bird life.
