Secret service

In2thewild (in2thewild.co) is a collection of 10 secluded self-contained cottages in secret locations in NSW, about two to three hours’ drive from Sydney, Canberra and Wollongong. Stay near a vineyard in the Hunter Valley, say, or on a working farm in the Southern Tablelands. Each tiny house sleeps two to four people and has comfortable beds, a kitchenette, a firepit and, most importantly, an ensuite with a hot shower. You need to bring your own food supplies for the weekend but you can safely leave your mobile devices behind because there’s usually no coverage.

Flying visit

Pack your waders for flyfishing at Currawong Lakes (currawonglakes.com.au), a forest retreat with four cabins and a lodge at the end of a 12-kilometre dirt road near Tasmania’s eastern coast. It’s miles from mobile coverage and, if you choose the Hunters Cabin or a Bush Cabin, you’ll have no internet. The accommodation is selfcontained so you can test your culinary skills with fresh trout then kick back with a local whisky in front of a wood fire.

Rock hopping

You’re outnumbered by kangaroos, wombats and yellow-footed rock-wallabies at Kangaluna Camp (gawler rangessafaris.com) in South Australia’s Gawler Ranges. A phone booster provides limited mobile coverage, although the owners of this boutique tented camp will happily shut it down when guests want to immerse themselves in the majesty of their vast, rocky surroundings.

Wild west

Standing knee-deep in water with hundreds of nervous sharks (a harmless species of requiem shark) may not be everyone’s idea of relaxation. But it does indicate that the ocean surrounding Dirk Hartog Island (dirkhartog island.com), off the Western Australian coast, is teeming with marine life. Your mobile phone will be useless at the self-contained Ocean Villa, which sleeps eight and is just metres from a virtually empty beach.
