CALL ME EVIE

J.P. Pomare / Hachette

The coastal town of Maketu, on New Zealand’s Bay of Plenty, makes an ideal hideout. Evie and Jim are holed up in an old beach shack, on the run from some kind of horrific incident in Melbourne, which may have been her fault. Jim says she has to do what he says, that he’s protecting her until she can get well, but Evie is not so sure. She thinks he’s lying and it feels like she’s being held prisoner. Trouble is, her mind is spitting up dark fragments of memory and trying to piece it all together may be driving her mad. The debut novel from a talented Kiwi writer, this literary thriller has more twists than a country back road and enough suspense to make you leave the lights on.
