Five more undiscovered locations to explore in Tasmania’s north-west. Penguin

This picturesque seaside village, about one hour’s drive from Stanley, is located on the edge of the mighty Bass Strait, with a pretty esplanade and scenic walking trails. There’s a three-metre penguin statue that makes a fabulous photo opportunity, while the real deal can be seen each night at Penguin Point. Boat Harbour and Sisters Beach Located next to a quiet bay with white sand and clear waters, Boat Harbour is a small beach community huddled between rocky headlands. About 10 kilometres away is Sisters Beach, a lovely, sleepy town high above sea level. Both towns are about an hour’s drive east of Stanley. Dismal Swamp There’s nothing gloomy about this region, a 40-minute drive south-west of Stanley. It’s home to a 110-metre slide that drops into a sinkhole widely believed to be the largest in the Southern Hemisphere. Local business Tarkine Forest Adventures (dismalswamp tasmania.com.au) offers a number of tours. Marrawah

Bring your board to this popular surfing destination. Overlooking the Southern Ocean, Marrawah is a great place to rest before taking the Western Explorer Highway south to Corinna, Zeehan and Strahan. Enjoy cruising on the Arthur River, crayfishing, abalone diving and Tasmanian devil spotting. Arthur River Named after the river that runs from the mountains to the sea, the town of Arthur River is a great base for exploring the Tarkine – Tasmania’s largest tract of temperate rainforest. This is the northern entry point to the Western Explorer Highway that leads from the coast to the beautiful wilderness area.
