The last thing TransferWise’s Taavet Hinrikus googled
Each month, we hack the minds of tech entrepreneurs and digital disruptors to find out what makes them tick.
Gadget that changed my life The Garmin watch. It records my sleep so I can see if I’m getting my seven hours. [Alongside] the heart rate tracker, it gives you a good view of whether you’re well or not. Favourite app for work I’ve just started using a new email client called Superhuman and I have high expectations. It’ll hopefully save me a few hours of work every week. Last thing I googled The banking royal commission. I think it’s great to see people looking into the shenanigans the banks have been up to.
Favourite app for wellness
I run quite a bit so it would have to be Runkeeper. Having historical data so you can see whether or not you’re making progress is pretty helpful. I’ve been using it for about a year and a half.
Gadget that didn’t change my life
I used to love photography. Ten years ago I would carry my DSLR and a couple of lenses around constantly. But at some point you notice the best camera is the one you always have with you, which means your phone becomes the most useful camera and that’s a reason to upgrade your phone every year – the camera gets better. I did buy a very good Fuji camera a couple of years ago but then I realised that I would never take it anywhere; it was just one more thing to carry around.
Current phone
iPhone XS Max. I was sceptical when it first came out but the bigger one makes sense when you do a lot of reading and writing on your phone.
Current computer
I prefer my MacBook when I need to type for longer but the best computer is the one you have with you all the time – your smartphone.
Social network I rely on most
Instagram. I don’t post that often nowadays but I find it more exciting than seeing what people are writing.
Filter of choice
My all-time favourite is Amaro.
Social network I don’t rely on
Over time I’m using Facebook less and less.
Book I’ve learnt the most from
Recently, I’ve enjoyed Ray Dalio’s Principles. It makes you think about how you guide your own life. I would recommend it.
Podcast I’m listening to
I don’t listen to podcasts. Some people listen to them while they’re commuting but I’ve never found how they fit into my daily life.
Favourite news source
The Financial Times; I’m very old-school. During the week, I look at it online and read the paper version on weekends when I get a chance to sit down with a coffee.
Startup to watch in 2019
I’m curious to see if Superhuman turns out to be all it says it will. It’s $30 a month so it has to be really useful to justify the cost.
