Hiking in Tasmania

- BY ALEX GREIG

Walk in the wilderness on the Apple Isle

IN THE ISLAND STATE, IT’S ALWAYS WORTH TAKING THE LONGER ROUTE. AND WITH 1.5 MILLION HECTARES OF WILDERNESS WORLD HERITAGE AREA ALONG WITH THOUSANDS OF KILOMETRES OF TRAILS, THERE ARE PLENTY OF WAYS TO GET OFF THE BEATEN TRACK.

Three Capes Track The walk

Less a walk and more a spiritual experience, the Three Capes Track winds through towering eucalyptus forests, past remote beaches and across wave-lashed cliffs. The Tasman Sea is your constant companion and dolphins, fur seals and migrating whales are all but guaranteed to join you for the adventure.

The nitty-gritty

Covering 48 kilometres, this popular trail is an easy-to-moderate trek that lets you go as close as your vertigo allows to some of the country’s highest sea cliffs.

The location

Your journey begins on Tasmania’s far south-east coast near Port Arthur with a short boat trip to Denmans Cove. From there it takes in Cape Pillar, Cape Hauy and views to Cape Raoul, concluding at the white sand arc and brilliant blue waters of Fortescue Bay.

The itinerary

There are several ways to tackle the trek but you can add the ultimate creature comforts by booking the four-day Three Capes Lodge Walk with Tasmanian Walking Company (taswalkingco.com.au). After a hard day with the poles, you’ll spend your nights refuelling with three-course dinners in the Tasman National Park’s only private accommodation – architect-designed lodges with hot showers and comfy beds.
