What is luxury in travel?

For some people, it’s about the plushest robes, the deepest bath and the greatest view. For others, it’s about a genuine connection in an exotic location. There’s also the attitude that luxury equals time. Time to get away, time to reflect and time to be filled with wonder.

The greedy among us (who, me?) might even say that luxury in travel is all of those things put together...

When I booked my family’s annual Christmas holiday, I had a mental list to tick off. I wanted us to go somewhere new. It had to offer a sense of natural beauty and give us the opportunity to get out amongst it. It had to feel Australian.

And yes, I wanted our accommodation to have incredible views. One of my favourite things to do on holiday is sit in front of a window at sunset, a glass of wine in hand, and watch the light change. It feels like a treat – it’s something I don’t do often enough in everyday life.

There are so many locations in Australia that met my criteria but border restrictions being what they were in December, we decided to go somewhere in our new home state of Tasmania. We opted for King Island.

The truth is that originally I wasn’t planning to write a story about our experience. This was a family holiday, a chance to switch off after a stressful year. But King Island was so extraordinary that I felt compelled to share it with you.

There was no butler or concierge but everyone we met gave us suggestions and tips. It’s not crammed with Instagrammers – we were often the only ones at the “tourist” spots. There was no infinity pool – just the sheer infinity of the Southern Ocean on our doorstep.

And the chance to spend quality time with my family in the most extraordinarily beautiful location? I definitely call that a luxury.

I hope you enjoy the issue.
